Fine Art-Cameleon Project Part 4-Phoenix 3

I continued to add colour to my Phoenix and begin to apply paint using a range of pallet knives.

For the wings I used a diamond shape and a round ended knife to create different textures.

I also used the same round ended knife to create a feathered texture on both the inner parts of the wings and the body.

I am extremely pleased with the way my Phoenix has turned out, especially the way its gold breast catches the light.

After finishing painting the first bird, I then moved onto projecting my second one onto an A0 sheet of paper.

I also tested out my idea of casting a shadow onto the wall which I found worked well, and I may use this for my final piece.

After I finished projecting the bird I began to fill it in with charcoal and black and white paint.

I wasn't sure how this bird would turn out since I have not had a lot of experience using charcoal, but I am thrilled with it and I feel it creates an interesting comparison between the vibrancy of the smaller colourful bird and the dark intensity of the one above. The growth represents POTENTIAL and the different colours, medias and textures represent TRANSFORMATION.

Drawing- Humming Bird Part 2

Due to lack of time, rather than build a sculpture out of our mechanical parts we decided to look at making a 2D collage of our design.

I first Photocopied the different parts that I wanted to use to build the bird and then cut them up and began to construct my 2D sculpture as seen below.

Fine Art- Chameleon Project Part 3- Phoenix Part 2

I continued to experiment with my Phoenix looking at the different wing structures and how I wanted to paint it. I looked through many different types of birds on the internet, looking a the different types of wings, and that is where I found the picture seen below.

I have decided to use this shape for my Phoenix since it is unusual and I am intrigued by the power displayed by the wings.

Here you can see my two completed design sheets including both my experimentations and research into the deeper meaning of the Phoenix.

I want to base my piece on the idea 'Transformation and Potential' which is why instead of having just a picture of a Phoenix, I am going to have a cut out of the bird which I will project onto the wall behind it using charcoal and a projector

I will include a suitcase in my installation and a path with photographs showing my transformation from little girl, to school girl to young woman which rises out of the case leading to my Phoenix. I am considering illuminating my installation.

After deciding on the shape of the bird I drew it out on a piece of thick card in pencil.

I then cut the bird out ready to be painted

I first added a light wash of yellow in  acrylics...

...and then started to add darker tones to my work especially the feathers on the wings.

Even though I have not finished it yet I am vey pleased with how the wings have turned out.

Drawing- Humming Bird

After dismantling our objects we worked in groups of 2 or 3 and started to think of what we could make out of the parts we had. We considered an insect at first, but decided it was too complicated, we therefore decided to make a humming bird.

The part we are going to use are from an Old TV, two phones and a hand-held vacuum cleaner.

As part of our humming bird design, I began to construct a flower for the humming bird to drink from.

I made it using an old TV speaker and a piece of curly telephone wire, which I glued together using a hot glue gun.

I also plan on attaching blue wire to it to add colour.

We plan to make the wings out of cut up circuit boards.

Fine Art- Chameleon Project Part 2- Phoenix

After completing our large scale suitcase drawing we were asked by our lecturer to choose a theme based around the suitcase. I therefore decided for the next stage in my project to look at the theme of moving away from an old life into a new life, and the changes it has on individuals. I decided on the idea of a phoenix and the theme "Transformation" since it is a bird which rises from the ashes of its old life and is reborn. This fits in with the idea of my transformation since I have been at BMET.

I began to construct a design sheet for my phoenix where I looked at how I wanted my design to look .

I did this using layers of washes starting at yellow and then working my way up through the different colours of the phoenix, adding in more detail every time.

Afterwards I noticed that the wings of the Phoenix were too wide for it to be able to take flight, therefore not realistic and something I aim to improve when creating the real thing.

Drawing- Mechanical Parts- Part 2

After completing the first half of the project I then moved onto looking at repeating shapes, line drawings and creating sculptures using a specific object. For my object I used an old phone rescued from the dump and the first thing I did was create a design sheet of line drawings of the phone taken from different angles, using a water soluble pen. After completing four different drawings I then moved onto taking my phone apart, in preparation to build a sculpture.

Although it is not complete yet I am pleased with the way each side of the phone has turned out making it look different every time. Below you can see photographs of the different angles that I drew the phone from.

I called this 'the Radio Phone' since I found that when turned on its side with the antenna, it looks like a radio.

After taking the phone apart, I then placed the different parts on a sheet of white paper.
You can also see close up pictures I took them below.
